O...I see a few others had issues with Ubuntu Lucid.
Only a few months after my previous posts, on solving the issue with Hardy x32, I myself did an upgrade to Lucid 10.04 x64, and had little trouble, the only difference to my Hardy solution was I only needed half the symbolic links of my previous post.

Now, I've had to do another fresh install (HDD was being dodgy, replaced it) and this time, the Ubuntu was done with 10.04.1 version and all online upgrades. Then when trying to setup MP600 as per previously, I had the architecture issue covered by diroots' link above.
That got the printer recognised, and could scan, but at present, printing doesn't happen. To elabor...woohoo! success, after a mere 14 hrs :-)
To elaborate;

I followed step one and 2.2 of above;
then jumped to the CUPS ppd thread, downloaded that stuff and copied files over as per README info.

Then went back to turning on the printer and my computer 'found' it by itself, but I still had to modify it to use the new ppd file (so basically back to step 4 above). Which is about the same point i'd got before my previous verbose post (not showing at time I posted this)

Following other posts (incl on the CUPS ppd thread), allowed debug info on the error log via terminal commands (easy way to do this - try checking the box in the CUPS admin page?).

Debug info showed what a lot of other posts experienced - that links needed to redirect the drivers to the files in /usr/local/bin instead of usr/bin

Then, with these links fixed, two other required links (already documented) showed up as well - libtiff3 and libpng3.

Summary steps for Hardy and CUPS1.3.7 in their current states:
1. steps 1.- and 2.2 from above;

2. if you want the improved ppd file, follow instructions under http://mp610.blogspot.com/2007/11/new-ppd-files-providing-more-printing.html
on this site (using sudo cp from command line to copy them to 'root' locations/permissions)

3. return to step 4 above

4. create links (also refer to threads on this site and others for info:)
sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/cifmp600 /usr/bin
sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/cngpijmonmp600 /usr/bin
sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/lgmonmp600 /usr/bin
sudo ln -s /usr/local/bin/printuimp600 /usr/bin
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libtiff.so.4 /usr/lib/libtiff.so.3
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libpng12.so.0 /usr/lib/libpng.so.3

5. Then, should be able to print test page (and after that, anything you want?)... but first I need an ink top-up before I go on a printing spree ;-) (run out of pink.. maybe Terry Pratchett's to blame.. hehe)

And maybe next wk I'll brave the scanner setup...;-)ShaneLnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4427895091445486464.post-19883489916726486342010-05-20T09:43:24.466+02:002010-05-20T09:43:24.466+02:00Well.. the finish line has been moved!
Have proble...Well.. the finish line has been moved!
Have problem that test page apparently goes to printer, but nothing happens at printer. Cassette tray issue (prev posts) didn't seem to fix it.
What I have tried after reading all this blog and many others:
installed canon-common driver 3.0;
installed mp600 driver 2.7;
installed 'better' ppd file;
setup (separately and simultaneously) all 4 driver/connection options available for the canon printer in CUPS-
i.e. the 'plain' MP600; ditto plus USB; Gutenprint plus USB; and USB with status readback.
(various combos with canon ppd and 'better' ppd)

These 4 options connect respectively as:
hal:///org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/usb_device_4a9_1718_20E991_if1_printer_noserial
usb://Canon/MP600
canon:/dev/usb/lp0
cnijusb:/dev/usb/lp0

Am running Ubuntu Hardy (8.04)
Cannot see anything amis with user/group permissions (but may have missed somethings subtle?)

no probs with CUPS setup doing above (though did have some issues when trying with older canon drivers etc).
can print head-clean-test, alignment-test direct from printer.
Tried using command line options including lp, and following canon-driver printer-info (html files), tried 'cngpij' and 'cif' commands. Nothing prints on all accounts, and for latter two, from terminal gives a message about not finding a lib file (I could fiddle with a link if i knew that was the only issue) and then mysteriously hangs in the terminal, doesn't give UI.

Found that when I turn printer off, CUPS recognises printer as 'off or disconnected' for first two connection options above but not for the latter two (both /dev/usb/lp0 options)

Have looked at access and error logs for CUPS, seems ambiguous. error messages about 'unauthorised' for adding/editing printer settings, yet those settings show as changed in the CUPS webpages. When printing, access log indicates 'print-job-successful-ok'...

Have also tried two different USB ports on my computer, without any difference in results.

another odd-ish thing is since these driver installs, on reboot (yes, tried rebooting after nearly all my printer setup attempts) with the printer still on and plugged USB, computer boots through BIOS, then pauses a few minutes on cursor, before continuing to GRUB and loading kernel and splash-screen. not sure if is result of printer still on and connected..?

Phew. still trying to nut it out (all day and night!). if anyone has ideas before I solve it, please post. Hopefully I will solve it and can give you all update on what currently works for this Hardy / MP600 combo!ShaneLnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4427895091445486464.post-64490570990865927252010-05-20T01:06:36.395+02:002010-05-20T01:06:36.395+02:00Hi, thanks for good advice :-) still completing pr...Hi, thanks for good advice :-) still completing process for Hardy but so far so good - got 'enhanced ppd and config files' from another blog/link; done the first part of your steps...and for that, did you mean MP630 (typo? canon search doesn't find a 638). I have checked the paper feed as has beenm suggested, but with no change.

I have set up cups to output in debug mode to the error log and the various programs appear to report correctly: for instance the log has lines like:

D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] pstocanonij: /usr/bin/gs -r600 -g4958x70
16 -q -dNOPROMPT -dSAFER -sDEVICE=ppmraw -sOutputFile=- -| /usr/bin/cifmp610 --i
mageres 600 --papersize a4 --media plain --paperload cassette --quality 3 --half
toning ed --renderintent photo --gamma 1.8 --balance_c 0 --balance_m 0 --balance
_y 0 --density 0 --contrast 0 --bbox 9,14,585,834
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] PID 3368 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/bannertops) exited
with no errors.
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] Read 72 bytes of print data...
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] STATE: -media-empty-warning
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] STATE: -offline-report
I [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] Printer is now online.
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] Wrote 72 bytes of print data...

D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] Wrote 1 pages...
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] PID 3369 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstops) exited wit
h no errors.
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] Read 14 bytes of print data...
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] [Job 25] Wrote 14 bytes of print data...
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] PID 3370 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstocanonij) exite
d with no errors.
D [29/Apr/2010:18:25:22 +0100] PID 3371 (/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb) exited with
no errors.

Any ideas would be gratefully received!!

Thanks, IanUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16252030962103035357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4427895091445486464.post-62475736570655292012010-01-29T09:55:39.512+01:002010-01-29T09:55:39.512+01:00To be more precise on my previous post:
